- One of 505 deserted islands in the Nagasaki Prefecture, this island was used during the industrialisation of Japan for its undersea coal mines. It was finally closed in 1974 and all residents left the island
- Pripyat, Ukraine
This town of 50,000 people was deserted en masse after the Chernobyl disaster in 1986. Because of the dangerous radiation nobody will be able to return for thousands of years.
- House of the Bulgarian Communist Party, Bulgaria
Established in 1981, this monument served as the centre of Bulgarian politics during the Soviet era. However, when the Iron Curtain fell the building was left to fall into disarray.
- Garnet, Montana, USA
There are lots of ghost towns similar to Garnet around the United States that were built at the turn of the 19th century. Originally established during western expansion and the gold rush, Garnet has been abandoned since the 1930s.
- Ross Island, Andaman
Ross Island originally served as the administrative headquarters for the British in the Andaman Islands during the British Raj. It was eventually abandoned in 1941 after a devastating earthquake.
